TINY HOUSE: FASHION OR FAD?

The current buzz of interest in small houses is astonishing, almost overwhelming. The name varies, but the idea of a tiny house can be summed up as being something like a caravan/campervan/trailer that looks like a small or tiny house rather than a caravan or a campervan, suggesting a certain, ‘respectable,’ permanence in habitation. The other accommodation not called ‘tiny homes,’ encapsulates and proudly promotes the expression of its mobility which remains something of a conflicting embarrassment for the tiny places.#

The miniature styling of the house has everything that tries its hardest to look like an ‘ordinary’ dwelling, both inside and out, but it is small, and on wheels, just like a caravan/etc. This housing concept that uses the suggestive reference to mobility for its own advantage, seems to have been promoted by Kevin McCloud of Grand Designs - see: https://voussoirs.blogspot.com/2022/05/thoughts-on-tiny-houses.html - as a strategy to overcome all planning controls: a mobile home does not need planning permission in spite of the intentions that remain the same, as if one was constructing a small permanent home. The wheels are fitted to overcome all bylaw complications, but there appears to be no necessity for them to ever rotate. Indeed, annexed structures like lean-to roofs and deck areas, are all detailed to give not just the appearance of permanence, but they are, ironically, themselves generally immobile, static structures with one of their core purposes being to conceal the wheels and all clues of mobility. These ‘permanent’ additions often make a mockery of the idea of manoeuvrability, turning the whole situation into something of a farce – a ‘let’s all pretend otherwise’ circumstance! It seems to be a charade that is successfully bluffing the planners, a task that seems to be getting easier every day.

While the services in campervans, trailers, and caravans are all purposefully resolved and managed to be carefully integrated as much as possible, and readily accessible, those in tiny homes are frequently ignored: there is rarely an external expression of any service connection that is happily celebrated in caravans/etc. With tiny houses, the core concerns seem to concentrate only on matters involving things to do with 'tiny' and 'house.' Occasionally one does get told about off-grid tiny homes; here there is more talk about the services and systems; but one is generally left to assume that power, water, sewer, and drainage are, and will be, always available, as if the home was permanent, wherever it might be. Small houses are shown in all kinds of locations, with the suggestion being that they are mobile and easily moved, when most look to be the least likely thing to be frequently moved around anywhere, ever. Any relocation must involve disconnection and re-connection of all services, a procedure that rarely gets a mention or a thought in the promotional material, let alone any discussion on the awkward difficulty involved in the moving of such heavy, bulky forms that are generally proportioned as if they might become caravans one day.

The reports and illustrations of tiny homes frequently just ignore all details of mobility and services, and their inconvenient mass, and gloat about how clever the 'tiny house' things are, all with an expected, "Can you believe it!" silent exclamation. One is led to assume that everything will be just as it would be for a permanent residence - perhaps better; but is it so? Can it be? What is the relationship between wheels, servicing and services? How are these places propped up? One is never told how a flat tyre might be managed, let alone power, water, and drainage, yet the ‘tiny’ concepts are promoted in all of their assumed glory for being just like a house, complete yet compact  – and relatively cheap. These are places that are said to be capable of going anywhere, at any time, in any number, without any commitment to land or region. They are frequently being illustrated as the tiny place is the wilderness, offering the idea of ‘freedom,’# where power, water, and drainage options are extremely limited. Is the idea really just an illusion; a 'pretend' game; pure fantasy?

It is all very clumsy, confusing, muddling, and messy when one gives the matter more thought. The promise of economical, comfortable, 'free' shelter seems to smother all other possible worries, and holds hopes high - yet the concerns linger. The ambition to avoid planning rules needs to be reconsidered with this flush of enthusiasm for small houses. To avoid what could easily become a shanty town shambles, we need rules and controls that can manage these little places, just as we seek to manage our cities. As things stand, the 'freedom' claimed by fitting wheels to a miniature, mock house means that these little places can arrive anywhere, at any time, in any number. Every backyard could have one – or even two! Cities could easily be turned into blighted areas, while public squalor could overtake pristine sites anywhere, even with a collection of the finest and most luxurious of ‘small house’ designs.

Much more thought needs to be given to tiny houses and their role in settlement. The loophole of wheels needs to be overcome so as to legitimise these little buildings, and allow them to fit into our towns, cities, and countryside with some degree of rich dignity and real commitment, instead of promoting the snide, overly-smart, aloof arrogance that is presently driving the fashionable fad. We need to find ways to make small things ordinary in a marvellous way, and share their wonder: after all, it is always the little things that are most important in life.

Without seeking out articles on the tiny house, the following is a list of links to reports that have turned up over the last couple of months. There is a real interest in tiny houses that needs to be managed before everything gets out of control, not only with planning matters, but also with the concept of small living itself: we need to resolve how tiny places can become a permanent, coherent, and valuable part of our environment, rather than being a bright pimple, a pox, likely to pop up anywhere, anytime.

ESCAPE CITY LIFE

Some tiny houses are not on wheels, but are designed to be carried on wheels to a location. The unspoken promise is ‘FREEDOM’! - see: https://www.yankodesign.com/2022/08/01/this-prefab-tiny-home-is-a-smart-mobile-unit-designed-to-help-you-escape-city-life/ The concept is that one is able to take a 'real' home anywhere, at any time, and be 'free.' The suggestion is that you, and you alone, will be out communing with nature, with peace, calm, and zen.

The modular homes aim to bring you closer to nature, to a space away from the crowds, where you can truly enjoy the beauty of a moment.

Might this be the reality?

This report is not so subtle about promoting the concept of 'freedom': the company name is Freedom For Me! - see: https://www.tropicnow.com.au/2022/august/2/first-orders-placed-as-far-north-queensland-affordable-home-start-up-breaks-new-ground

NOTE

19 AUGUST 22

The following article highlights the concerns that some authorities are starting to have about the popularity of tiny houses: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-08-18/warning-over-unlawful-shipping-container-home-health-risks/101345758

It was never unexpected. The naming, ‘shipping container homes,’ takes some of the gloss off the dream of things delightfully tiny.

 20 AUG 22

The reports keep appearing daily. This one highlights the ambition: it is a ‘home on wheels’ that offers a ‘flexible + nomadic life’: see - https://www.yankodesign.com/2022/08/14/this-norwegian-wooden-tiny-home-on-wheels-was-built-for-a-flexible-nomadic-life/

The photographs show what is meant: small spaces with everything of quality one might want in a home, apart from a little height over the bed. This ‘flexible + nomadic’ solution comes complete with a not so ‘flexible + nomadic’ deck and stairs. There is an inherent conflict in this concept that anchors an ambition on the love of outdoor place and the desire to move on.

A bathroom, a kitchen, an office, a bed in the loft, and a couch, all cleverly photographed, framed piecemeal with the wide angle lens to make this tiny place appear grandly spacious as a set of jigsaw parts to be happily assembled as a vision for the reader to drool over without understanding just how tiny it really is. Note how the bathroom shower and basin areas have been photographed to avoid the toilet pan that sits in between. A similar technique has been used to photograph the kitchen/dining/office space. The general view shows the arrangement, but the detail images have the person sitting in front of the refrigerator for the 'office' shot, and standing in front of the oven for the 'kitchen' angle, with the very adjacent refrigerator framed out. It would be difficult to swing the proverbial cat in this place.

One has to wonder how the 'home' might be used. The bathroom and kitchen areas are 'service' spaces, leaving the couch as the only other area to pause at for any length of time. One can sit at the office/dining bench, but another might want to work in the kitchen. The photographs suggest that one can contemplate the distance of infinity from the bench or the couch. The top image probably tells the story; everyone will sit on the deck outside as there is really nowhere to go inside - on a sunny day. The deck becomes the core place for gathering; ironically it is the more static side of this 'flexible + nomadic' arrangement that seems to be always dreaming of somewhere else, wanting to 'move on' to complete the vision: but how; where to?

What do four people do on a rainy day when the doors cannot be swung wide-open? The hype of things 'tiny, flexible, and nomadic' needs to be thought through carefully. How might one on the low side of the bed get out to go to the toilet at night - and get back?
