DREAMS OF A MOUNTAIN COTTAGE

This article presents the mountain cottage, Jin-Hwa Mountain Cottage by Todot Architects & Partners. The images offer the vision of a place alone the mountains; a private retreat where one could quietly contemplate the solitude of the high country and its mysteries: my magical mountains; my experience; alone in nature – see: https://www.archdaily.com/982683/jin-hwa-mountain-cottage-todot-architects-and-partners. The photographs of the project suggestively capture this vision of remote, private place framing high distance. Out of all of the published images, there are only two that tell the true story and reveal the actual context of this building.

Here, in this article, we see an extreme example of how photography is able to manipulate matters and control our understanding of architecture. It is very rare to see the dream shattered, exposed in this way. The photographer must have passed through this village to get to the site that was photographed. All the images except for the aerial views must have been taken with the knowledge, awareness, and experience of place deliberately excluded, with the project expressed in a special way: as if it were alone. Is modernity necessarily singular? - see: https://voussoirs.blogspot.com/2020/02/villa-mairea-city-of-solitude.html.

THE CONTEXT.

One has to think about how we come to know of buildings today, and how this understanding can be managed, manipulated to present something that never was, never is going to be, and never will be. Yet we carry the visions and expectations gleaned from these selective images as our actual perception of place – experienced knowledge.

This mountain cottage example highlights how we have to be wary of the tailored images presented to us using a technique that has become the norm. Do we all live with false interpretations and expectations of architecture? Are our hopes and dreams based on falsehoods? Are our ambitions and intents all based on impossible perceptions that seek to create more of the same hapless phantoms - delusional illusions? Might one call it 'Pinterest' architecture?

One wonders if these deliberately staged misconceptions are the root cause of our current entanglement with stylish style for the sake of stark, startling style seeking to exhibit smart difference, guiding the attempts to replicate our misunderstandings. Have we been made immune to context; careless off it; treating it dismissively as though it was the problem?
